Learning English is not just about vocabulary and how to speak. In the ability to write English, you also need to understand grammar and punctuation so that every word you say is following the provisions.
So, to improve this ability you can choose to take English courses provided by the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Why take this course? By taking this course, you will gain broader knowledge about English, especially learn grammar and punctuation.
This course is free. But if you want to get a certificate, there is a fee payable.
What Will You Learn
Week 1: Course Introduction
This course over some of the basics of grammar and punctuation that need to do good writing. But, it’s not included to review all aspects of English grammar because of only a few topics chosen for this class. You can watch video lectures, do readings, do practice exercises, and take quizzes if you join this course.
Week 2: Verb Tenses and Conjunctions
In this course, you will watch video lectures, do readings, do practice exercises, and take quizzes. You can re-watch the videos or redo the exercises as many times as to help understand the material. This will help you review verb tenses and how to use them correctly. Then begin learning about how to use conjunctions in your sentences.
Week 3: Compound and Complex Sentences
You can use four types of sentences In English, that you can use and should use to make your writing more interesting to read. So, you’ll know about two of the advanced sentence types by the great instructors.
Week 4: More Commas, Parallel Structure, and Sentence Variety
After studying this course, you’ll know about 95% of the ways commas can be used. That means you’ll be able to write confidently using commas correctly and not just guessing. In addition, you’ll learn about creating a parallel structure and sentence variety too.
After learning these, you will have the ability to identify the correct verb tenses and write more effectively in English.

The Instructors
Tamy Chapman
Ms Tamy Chapman joined in the teaching activity in the field of ESL since 1996. He has experience in several years as an EFL teacher or trainer with the Peace Corps in China. He has a master’s degree in English from Texas Tech University. He is an instructor for International Programs and has an ESL teaching certificate from UCI.
Helen Nam
Ms Nam has two master’s degrees in TESOL and Philosophy. She is a full-time teacher with International Programs at UCI. She is also serving on the Board of CATESOL as well as the local Orange County Chapter.
